Coupon Basics

Couponing is a great way to save money, and it can be really fun!  You can make it what you want to be.  You could treat couponing as a full-time job.  You really could chase down every deal, at every store, every week.  I don't recommend that.  It can be very stressful to do it that way.  There are going to be some weeks where you just have to step back and say - I need a break.  Some weeks there are a lot of deals to get, and some weeks there may be just one or two items.  Start slowly, with just one drugstore and one grocery store.  Get to know the coupon policy for those stores, get signed up for emails and as many promotions for those stores as they offer.  Here are a few pointers to help you get started:

Money Saving Meals: Meal Plan Week of 11/25

This week at Food Lion(thru Tuesday) they have ham on sale for a great stock up price.  They also have a 93% ground beef value pack on sale(freeze leftovers).  So, I've planned my meals around those items.  If you've signed up for Food Lions emails then you have a $2 off a meat purchase you can use with those two meat items.  I will make a ham, with all the trimmings on Monday, and then use the leftovers for homemade Ham, Broccoli & Cheese Crescent Pockets later in the week.  Same type "leftover" deal with the meatballs.  I'm going to use them two different ways.  Most of the side items I have already in my cabinets, but I will post coupons at the bottom and they are pretty easily found on sale this time of year. 


Monday:  Ham, Betty Crocker Scalloped Potatoes, corn & rolls

Tuesday: Jumbo Meatballs, vegetable and salad (Make extra meatballs for Thursday)

Ham, Broccoli & Cheese Crescent Pockets

Ham, Broccoli & Cheese Crescent Pockets (my version of a "HotPocket")

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups cooked broccoli florets (Recommend: BirdsEye Steamfresh, just steam in microwave according to bag directions)

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1/2 cup cubed fully cooked ham

1/4 cup sliced green onions

1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, minced (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

8 Large Crescent Roll Triangles

 

 

On a greased cookie sheet lay out 4 of your Crescent Roll Triangles. 

 

Combine remainder of ingredients in a large bowl.  Spoon the mixture onto each of the triangles. 

 

Top each one with the remaining triangles and pinch the edges to seal. 

 

Bake at 375 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until they're golden brown. 

If they're is leftover filling, you can fill some more triangles and bake and freeze them for a quick dinner later.  The amount of filling left will depend on how much you would like to put in each!

Money Saving Meals: Jumbo Meatballs

Here's another recipe that uses a lot of the items that are one sale this week at a bunch of different stores.  Stovetop stuffing, Kraft Ranch dressing, and Kraft shredded cheese!  I have tried this recipe before and they are really good.  Serve them with some canned beans, which you can also find on sale at some of the dollar stores, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Giant, and Lowe's foods.  Even if you're not going to make them this week, get the items while they're on sale and save them for next week!

Brushetta Chicken Bake

Here's a money saving meal for this weeks sales!  This week there's a lot of stores (Kroger, Giant, Harris Teeter) that have Stove-Top stuffing mix on sale for 50 cents a box.  Kroger also has a deal on canned Muir Glen tomatoes which end up being free and Kraft shredded cheese on sale.  Stock up on a few extra so you can make it in the future also!  Find printable coupons for some of these items at the bottom of the recipe.
